Postdoctoral Research Assistant Nuffield Department of Women’s & Reproductive Health, The Oxford Science Park, Oxford Grade 7: Salary in the range £31,604 - £35,550 p.a. The Nuffield Department of Women’s & Reproductive Health is looking for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant to join Professor Dagan Wells’ team. The research group has responsibility for carrying out research into the influence of mitochondria on various aspects of reproduction. In particular, the research work will focus on the analysis of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequence and quantification of the amount of mtDNA in human oocytes and mouse preimplantation embryos. This project seeks to examine how differences in mitochondrial function and copy number in eggs and preimplantation embryos are related to various factors relevant to reproduction, including age, chromosome abnormality and body mass index. The post will be particularly focused on mitochondrial DNA and will involve methods of whole genome amplification, quantitative PCR and next generation sequencing. This is part of a larger international collaboration which will study various aspects of mitochondrial function in gametes and embryos. The work will be non-clinical, specifically focusing on aspects of reproductive biology. Your responsibilities will include: developing new scientific techniques and experimental protocols; testing hypotheses and analysing scientific data from a variety of sources; developing ideas for generating research income through grant applications, and presenting detailed research proposals to senior researchers; collaborating in the preparation of scientific reports and journal articles and occasionally present papers and posters; and acting as a source of information and advice to other members of the group on scientific protocols and experimental techniques. You will PhD/DPhil (or near completion) in a biological subject, ideally involving research using molecular biology techniques, together with relevant experience and will possess sufficient specialist knowledge of molecular biology to work within established research programmes. You will be able to manage your own academic research and associated activities, have previous experience of contributing to publications/presentations and be able to contribute ideas for new research projects and research income generation. Excellent communication and analytical skills as well as knowledge of DNA amplification techniques (e.g. PCR) are also essential for this role.
