The Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (MEB) is among the largest departments of epidemiology in Europe with special focus on increasing our knowledge of the aetiology of different diseases. Our department consists of researchers, doctoral students, biostatisticians, data collectors and database administrators as well as administrative personnel, in total some 250 staff. A doctoral student is admitted to third-cycle/doctoral education. A doctoral education consists of supervised research, combined with courses and other educational activities. An individual study plan is established for each doctoral student. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.
Biostatistics Research Group
The Biostatistics Group at MEB has 4 professors, 5 senior researchers, 5 assistant professors, 3 post-docs, approximately 16 Ph.D. students and 9 applied statisticians. Members of the Biostatistics Group conduct methodological research in a broad range of areas, including surrogates, causal inference, clinical trials, epidemiological methods, registry-based analysis methods, image analysis, flexible survival analysis, statistical genetics, and joint modeling of longitudinal and survival data. The group collaborates within the department and with groups worldwide on cancer treatment and diagnosis, psychiatric disorders, aging, transfusion medicine and HIV treatment.
Area of responsibilities/description of the work
Applications are invited for a PhD research training position to work on the development of statistical methods for surrogate evaluation in observational settings in infectious disease. The applicant must have a strong interest in developing statistical methods, as well as a willingness to participate in applied collaborative work.

You meet the general eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:
have been awarded a second-cycle/advanced/master qualification (i.e. master degree) or have satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the advanced/second-cycle/master level, or have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.*

You meet the specific eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:
Show proficiency in English equivalent to the course English B/English 6 at Swedish upper secondary school.

Skills and personal qualities
The applicant should have a master’s degree in statistics, biostatistics, math or related quantitative discipline, and have a strong interest in statistical methods/theory. The applicant should have at least some knowledge or training in immunology, virology, parasitology or medical training. The applicant should have at least some knowledge or training in causal inference Fluency in written and spoken English is required. Programming skill in R is considered a strong merit. The applicant should be able to work well in a team, as well as having the ability to work independently. The applicant should have a willingness to travel for field studies and for internships.
Terms and conditions
The doctoral student will be employed on a doctoral studentship maximum 4 years full-time.

Selection
A selection will be made among eligible applicants on the basis of the ability to benefit from doctoral education. The qualifications of the applicants will be evaluated on an overall basis.
