PhD-position
At the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Clinical Medicine, a PhD-position (100 %) is available for a period of three (3) years. The position is part of the project “Identification and characterization of gene variants found in patients with retinal disorders”, funded by The Retinitis Pigmentosa Foundation.

About the project/work tasks:
The aim of the project is to identify novel genes associated with hereditary eye disorders and to characterize how the mutation(s) lead(s) to disease at a molecular and cellular level.

In this project, the PhD candidate will take part in the groups´ work on hereditary retinal disorders. Knowledge on retinal diseases is rapidly expanding, also with opportunities for gene therapy treatment. It is therefore important to know the disease causing variants in patients. Each year, approximately 50 new patients are diagnosed with a hereditary retinal disorder at the Department of Ophthalmology, Haukeland University Hospital, and diagnostic exome sequencing is performed in nearly all of them.

The candidate will participate in an evaluation of all patients with retinal disorders examined so far by exome sequencing at Haukeland University Hospital. Suitable patients where the causative mutation has not been found by routine diagnostic exome sequencing will be examined further by additional methods to identify causative variants. This includes extended exome sequencing, whole genome sequencing and RNA sequencing together with bioinformatics analysis. A major aim of the project will be to characterize functionally selected variants in both cells from the patients and in different in vitro expression systems using established molecular methods.
