Description The University of Florida (UF) invites applicants for the full-time position of Director for the UF Genetics Institute (www.ufgi.ufl.edu). The Director reports to the UF Vice President for Research. The aim of the UF Genetics Institute (UFGI) is to promote excellence in genetics and genomics at the University of Florida by: (1) building community, facilitating collaboration, and creating opportunities for intellectual exchanges among investigators using diverse systems to study genetics and genomics, (2) supporting recruitment and retention of outstanding faculty in genetics and genomics, (3) supporting graduate education in genetics and genomics and (4) enhancing the ability of researchers at the University of Florida to compete for multidisciplinary research grants in genetics and genomics. The 233-member faculty of the UFGI represents seven colleges and 51 academic departments, as well as the libraries and the Florida Museum of Natural History. During the 2018-2019 academic year, UFGI investigators secured $74 million in sponsored research support, filed 56 US, patents and published 829 scholarly articles.Three UFGI members were cited as being among the top 1% of most highly-cited researchers world-wide over the last 10 years. The UFGI occupies one of two wings in the 270,000 square-foot Cancer & Genetics Research Complex, completed in 2006. Twenty-four UFGI faculty members from the Colleges of Medicine, Liberal Arts and Sciences, and Agriculture and Life Sciences are housed in UFGI space, which provides a variety of shared equipment for molecular biology, biochemistry and genetics, as well as shared work spaces such as animal facilities, growth chambers for controlled environmental studies of plants, and a greenhouse facility. The UFGI has a weekly seminar series, an annual international genetics symposium, and a variety of regularly scheduled focus group meetings in areas such as epigenetics, developmental biology, and RNA biology. Uniquely among UF Institutes, the UFGI maintains its own graduate program, the Genetics & Genomics Graduate Program (G&G), which emphasizes computational and analytic training in conjunction with wet laboratory experience, leading to the Ph.D. degree. Currently, the Graduate Program has 30 students training in 11 different departments in 5 colleges. The UFGI also directs a science education outreach program for underserved rural communities in North central Florida. As part of this program, graduate students from G&G and other programs at UF travel to high schools in neighboring counties where they engage the local students in classroom-based scientific experiments and talk about their own choice to pursue science as a career. Responsibilities The Director will be responsible for leading and facilitating the University-wide strategic research initiatives in genetics, genomics, and the educational goals of the UFGI. This will include the coordination, design, performance, and evaluation of educational and research programs within the Institute, research acquisition (grant acquisition and fundraising), and development of both the faculty and the facility.
