The University of Washington School of Dentistry invites applications for a tenurable position as Graduate Program Director at the Associate  or Full Professor level in Oral Health Sciences (OHS). The position is full time with a 12-month service period. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2021. The successful candidate will have primary responsibility for directing the OHS graduate program; teaching didactic and laboratory-based courses in the life, biomedical, and oral sciences to students enrolled in graduate programs at the School of Dentistry; directing a laboratory-based research program that complements and augments the existing OHS training program; and actively participating in service to the university and profession.


  • overseeing admissions to the PhD, DDS/PhD, and M.S. degree tracks that comprise the OHS graduate program
  • organizing and directing the weekly OHS seminar series which runs throughout the academic year
  • student advising and monitoring overall progress of enrolled students
  • communicating with prospective students about admissions requirements and available funding
  • writing periodic progress reports and self-study documents as required by the University of Washington Graduate School, and
  • serving on thesis advisory committees as required
  • continuing an established track-record of directing a research program in the oral sciences that would complement or augment our existing training program
  • using collaborative leadership skills to direct and nurture the research-based graduate educational program for the department

The University of Washington (UW) is proud to be one of the nation’s premier educational and research institutions. The UW School of Dentistry consists of 8 separate academic departments, each with its own graduate-level training program. The OHS graduate program is multi-disciplinary, and currently includes about 40 training faculty appointed from within the UW Schools of Dentistry, Medicine, Public Health, Engineering and Pharmacy. Active research areas of training faculty include studies of the human oral microbiome and specific perturbations in periodontal disease and aging, the study of dental pulp stem cells, molecular mechanisms of carcinogenesis, cellular mechanisms of bone formation and resorption, and dental public health research focused on defined pediatric and adult populations. We will consider exceptional candidates who have a PhD (or DDS/PhD) degree, or foreign equivalent in a life science field such as biology, microbiology, genetics, cell biology, immunology, developmental biology or biochemistry.  Qualified candidates must have an established track record of obtaining external research funding, scholarship, and a demonstrated record of mentoring and training graduate students.
