Hein) of the Department of Health Services Research of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the University Oldenburg, together with the University Clinic for Visceral Surgery (Prof. Dr. Dirk Weyhe) and the Anatomy working group (Prof. Dr. Anja Bräuer) and the research institute OFFIS there is a vacancy for a

scientific research assistant (m/f/d)

(salary group 13 TV-L 65%)

limited to three years.

The aim of this cooperative project called "CAWIP (Clinical Anatomy for Well-Informed Patients)" is the research and development of medical technology solutions for the visual support of patients in the information before surgical interventions. Innovative methods of visualizing and customizing anatomical data via a smartphone are being investigated. The focus of the Department of Assistance Systems and Medical Technology ( is on the development of environmental sensors and personalized assistance functions and machine learning methods.

Within the scope of the position, a smartphone app for patient education prior to cancer surgery will be designed, iteratively developed with users* and tested in collaboration with the cooperation partners. Major tasks include:

  1. Training and validation of a CNN to detect body features from RGB (D) smartphone images.
  2. Accurately localizing organ locations and overlaying corresponding organ images (e.g., from an anatomy atlas ) on the RGB images.
  3. The integration of this functionality into an (Android) smartphone application to be developed.

The future job holder is expected to have a university degree (Master or equivalent) in computer science, (medical) engineering or in a related field, in case of the application for habilitation a completed doctorate in the mentioned subject areas.

In addition, you are expected to have experience in machine learning or computer vision. Experience in Android app development is desirable. Programming skills in Python and Java are required. Good German and English skills complete your profile.
