Gerontechnology is the study of technology and aging to ensure good health, social participation, and independent living. The relevance and importance of this field increases with the aging of our society. Within the Gerontechnology and Rehabilitation Group, clinicians, psychologists and engineers collaborate with the goal to develop and evaluate contact-free sensor technology and machine learning algorithms to derive digital biomarkers that promote independent living for elderly patients with mental illness or neurodegenerative disorders.

To complete our research team, we are seeking a motivated software engineer that helps in building a pipeline to control an instrumented apartment. The 3.5 room apartment is designed and equipped with over 200 sensors (e.g., Radar, Lidar, Motion Tracking) in order to unobtrusively assess and monitor human behaviour and how neurological disorders influence daily life of patients over a prolonged time. For this position, we are looking for a strong and motivated software engineer with a bachelor's degree in computer science (FH, Uni) or equivalent work experience and interest to collaborate with an interdisciplinary team of clinicians and engineers. We expect that the applicant knows best practices in software development and can produce well-tested and maintainable code.

The successful applicant will help in maintenance and developing of web-based interfaces for therapists and researchers, aid in design and implementation of various parts of the server infrastructure and helping conducting experiments.
Personal Skills and Attributes:
  • Experience with scalable software architecture like microservices, APIs (e.g., REST), container deployment (e.g., Docker) as a plus
  • Knowledge of front-end web development (ideally full stack)
  • Work experience in Typescript and Python (other programming languages are a plus)
  • Familiarity with Git/GitLab
  • Experience and working knowledge of database systems is a plus (e.g., MongoDB)
  • Basic knowledge of networks
  • Experience working in an agile environment
  • Willingness to work with designers to create a fun, exciting, and unique experience for end-users
You want to be able to define your own version of work-life balance - flexible is our go-to word. We offer flexible working hours (no block hours), working from home and the opportunity to integrate own ideas. We are a dynamic young team of engineers looking forward to having you join us. The position is available immediately, whereas the starting date can be discussed.

Always feel free to contact Dr. Stephan Gerber, ARTORG Center, at stephan.m.gerber@unibe.ch or +41 31 664 0983. Please send your complete application via e-mail, including grades and a portfolio of past projects.
