Research Assistant in Clinical Neurosciences
University of Cambridge
United Kingdom

We are looking to recruit a research assistant to join the group of Professor Patrick Chinnery in the Department of Clinical Neurosciences, Cambridge University. The role holder will work alongside the Research Project Manager to assist in recruiting patients to a range of observational research studies within the Department of Clinical Neurosciences, with a particular focus on mitochondrial diseases.

The post holder will be key to assist the effective running of the group's clinical research studies, acting as the main point of contact for participants enrolled on the research studies, organising patient visits, supporting participants through investigations (e.g. MRIs and muscle biopsies) and attending outpatient clinics. The role holder will be responsible for maintaining the continuous informed consent of participants to ensure that the procedures and treatments agreed within the study protocol are fulfilled according to good clinical practice (GCP). The nature of the studies mean that some home visits to complete study assessments/blood sampling will need to be performed, and as such, some flexibility in working hours may be required. In addition, the post-holder will need to work with a range of other teams within the hospital (e.g. Imaging, Clinical Research Facilities), and consequently excellent communications skills are a necessity. As part of the role, the successful candidate will also be expected to assist in maintaining clinical and sample databases, as well as completing basic processing of human samples.

This is an exciting opportunity for an individual with a pro-active and flexible approach to assist Professor Chinnery in facilitating world-class research studies, and contribute to improving the treatments and outcomes for future mitochondrial disease patients.

The successful candidate will educated to degree level in a health related or biomedical science subject or have equivalent experience. Recent training in Good Clinical Practice, informed consent and phlebotomy would be an advantage, in addition to experience of clinical research, but full training will be provided. This is a full time post but candidates seeking part time working would be considered.

Informal enquiries may be made to Heather Biggs, Research Project Manager (hb292@cam.ac.uk).

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 30 September 2021 in the first instance.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service check (enhanced with adults' barred list) and a health assessment. This appointment also requires a Research Passport application.
