Research Assistant in Diet, Anthropometry and Physical Activity

The MRC Epidemiology Unit is seeking to appoint a Research Assistant to support the work of the NIHR BRC Diet, Anthropometry and Physical Activity group across the breadth of dietary assessment activity to ensure work coverage.


The Diet, Anthropometry and Physical Activity (DAPA) group is part of the Cambridge NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) Nutrition, Diet and Lifestyle research theme, based at the MRC Epidemiology Unit in the University of Cambridge. Our work in dietary assessment is focussed on the development, validation, application and dissemination of effective methods for measurement of diet, food and nutrient intakes across in clinical trials, natural experiments, observational studies and national surveys.

The primary role of this post is updating and maintaining dietary assessment systems and related food composition databases. Responsibilities also include planning and supporting dietary data coding and quality assurance. In addition, the Research Assistant will provide a range of research support for method and process innovation and development work.

The post will be based in the MRC Epidemiology Unit department within the University of Cambridge's School of Clinical Medicine, situated within the Institute of Metabolic Science on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus. Its mission is to study the genetic, developmental and environmental factors that cause obesity, diabetes and related metabolic disorders and develop strategies for their prevention. The Unit benefits from a number of large-scale, cross programme epidemiological studies with detailed datasets allowing a wide range of research from genetics to public health. Highly experienced information teams and other specialist teams support the scientists in the delivery of their research aims.

The successful candidate will hold a first degree (or higher) in a relevant area (e.g. nutrition, food sciences) and ideally some experience of working in a research environment. Applicants should also have demonstrable understanding of and practical work experience in dietary assessment methods, ideally including automated systems, and/or food composition databases. They will also have experience of dietary data processing and quality assurance along with a desire to contribute to dietary assessment method and process development through improvements to the functionality, usability and accuracy of systems and databases.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 1 years in the first instance.
