Research Assistant in Infection Immunology (COVID-19)

The Department of Medicine, Solna, is one of the largest clinical departments at Karolinska Institutet. The department is divided into divisions which in turn consist of one or more research groups. The activity consists of research, postgraduate education and undergraduate education for future doctors and biomedicine scientists. The department has three profile areas: allergy, cardiovascular medicine and inflammatory diseases.

Your mission

We are looking for a research assistant who will work in a project focused on understanding what dictates disease severity in COVID-19. We have established a cohort of 160 COVID-19 patients with different disease severity, ranging from mild/asymptomatic to severe/fatal disease. In longitudinal blood and airway samples, we study innate and adaptive immune responses during acute infection and convalescence. We have attracted funding for our COVID research from the Swedish Research Council, the Swedish Heart and Lung Foundation and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The employment includes processing of blood and airway samples, biobanking and analysis using different immunological assays. Careful documentation is required. 

Your profile

To be eligible, an applicant should hold a Bachelor or Master’s degree in medicine, bio-medicine, biochemistry/cell biology or similar topic, or have otherwise acquired essentially equivalent competence in Sweden or abroad. Experience with work on biological samples, Ficoll separation of blood and cell culture is required. You are thorough, and used to planning, organizing and documenting your work clearly. You work in a dynamic way, have easy to adapt to reprioritisations, but at the same time maintain a professional and precise work level. We are looking for someone who is positive, flexible and enjoy working in teams. You also need to be able to communicate clearly

Location

The position is located within the Department of Medicine, Solna. The department consists of twelve divisions and each division consists of several research groups. The position is located within the research group of Associate Professor Dr. Anna Smed Sörensen. The Smed Sörensen lab does translational immunology of the respiratory system in viral infection and inflammatory diseases. We have established a unique cohort of COVID-19 patients that we follow longitudinally to study immune responses during acute infection and convalescence. We have attracted dedicated funding for our COVID research from the Swedish Research Council, the Swedish Heart and Lung Foundation and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
