Research Assistant in Protein Purification
University of Cambridge Centre for Misfolding Diseases
United Kingdom

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 2 years in the first instance.

Applications are invited for a Research Assistant role in the Centre for Misfolding Diseases to assist in studies related to understanding the mechanistic details involved in protein misfolding diseases. The project involves recombinantly expressing and purifying misfolding-related proteins and peptides, which will be used for a variety of biophysical analyses. The successful candidate will produce these proteins in bacteria and yeast expression systems, purify them using a variety of chromatography techniques (Akta purification systems, HPLC) and characterise their purity using optical spectroscopy, SDS-PAGE analysis and western blotting. Other duties may include, but are not limited to, site-directed mutagenesis, molecular cloning and assisting in running a busy laboratory (i.e. purchasing, maintenance of equipment related to protein purification, DNA/protein stock organisation).

The successful candidate will have a B.Sc degree (or equivalent) in a relevant biological science. They will be highly motivated and able to work independently. Excellent organisational and interpersonal skills are required to ensure success in liaising with a large and diverse team. Understanding and experience about recombinant protein expression and purification is necessary, experience with standard molecular biology techniques is desirable but not essential.
