Position Overview

The Department of Community Health Sciences in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Assistant. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.


At the Health Technology Assessment Unit, we are a team of dedicated health services researchers who are passionate about bridging the gap between science and policy. Our vision is to be a leader in supporting evidence-informed health policy with innovative and relevant research. Our innovative research program includes health technology assessments, economic evaluation, reimbursement decision-making and health technology reassessment. Embedded throughout all our products and research is stakeholder engagement and understanding the user and patient perspective. 


This position reports to Director of the Health Technology Assessment Unit and will be responsible for development, planning and execution of the qualitative components of all policy work. Extensive knowledge in qualitative and/or mixed methods research is required.  Experience in health policy would be an asset.  It requires strong analytical and problem solving skills, and excellent verbal and written communication skills.  The position involves multiple and shifting priorities, with periods of high volume and strict deadlines. 


Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Timely delivery of outputs to Faculty

  • Contribution to the overall research, learning and development objectives of the research

  • Leadership in the preparation of manuscripts, reports and other scientific products

  • Contribute to and foster the positive team environment

  • Establishes and maintains effective, productive relationships with staff, peers, immediate supervisor, senior management, and with the campus community

  • Manages own time effectively and ensures manager is aware of activities and progress of work

  • Understanding of safety codes, standards, and systems related to specialization

  • Develop and execute qualitative and mixed-methods research while upholding the best practices for scientific rigor

  • Partner directly with community to gather data

  • Manage multiple projects to deliver on time in accordance with the expected commitment to high quality research

  • Preparation of manuscripts for publication, and other dissemination activities


Qualifications / Requirements:

  • PhD  with expertise in qualitative methods in a health-related discipline ((e.g. community health sciences, population health, social work, nursing)

  • Minimum of 3 years related experience in a health related discipline

  • Demonstrated strength in communication, interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team

  • Demonstrated ability and comfort to work collaboratively with community partners

  • Ability to provide support to other members of the team

  • Demonstrated proficiency in scientific writing, including scientific abstracts, manuscripts for peer-review, and other scientific products

  • Open to learning and development, and be willing to accept new challenges and assignments

  • Knowledge of University core business systems is desirable
