Scientific Research Assistant


The Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) is a world-leading institute in global health with a particular focus on low- and middle-income countries. Associated with the University of Basel, Swiss TPH combines research, services, and education and training at the local, national and international level. Within a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation - funded project, we are seeking to recruit an outstanding:

Scientific Research Assistant (50%)

The project aims at developing microbiota-targeted interventions to treat the dysbiosis associated with undernutrition and environmental enteric dysfunction (EED), a chronic inflammatory disease in children from low- and middle-income countries. Specifically, the project aims at developing in vitro and in vivo models for EED and chronic undernutrition and to test potential microbiota-targeted interventions. The position is based in Switzerland in the Human and Animal Health Unit under the supervision of Dr. Pascale Vonaesch and is embedded in a larger project executed in close collaboration with the Maier Group, University of Tübingen.

Your position

  • Setting-up a cell-based assay to screen bacteria for given pathophysiological functions
  • Test given bacterial strains in in vitro models as well as an in vivo model of undernutrition
  • Other laboratory-based and analysis tasks as needed within the project

Your profile

  • MSc in microbiology or cell biology or any other relevant domain, or a diploma as laboratory technician with several years of experience
  • Previous experience in cell culture techniques, experience with bacterial culture would be a plus
  • Experience in rodent models would be a strong asset
  • Excellent organizational skills and detail-oriented working style
  • Personal motivation and the ability to work independently as well as a member of a team

You will be part of a young and dynamic team of microbiota experts and closely collaborate with partners at the Department of clinical microbiology, University of Basel, the Biozentrum, the University of Tübingen and the Afribiota consortium. You can expect to co-author several articles.
