Professor Helen McShane’s research group is dedicated to developing new candidate vaccines for tuberculosis. For the last 14 years, we have been conducting Phase 1 and 2 clinical trials to evaluate the safety, immunogenicity and efficacy of these vaccines in the UK and in Africa.

We are seeking a Research Assistant to work with a postdoctoral scientist on the pre-clinical side to evaluate the immunogenicity and protective efficacy of new vaccines in an in vivo model. The position also includes general lab duties (maintaining supplies, consumables and instruments); preparing reagents; cataloguing frozen samples; and some data analysis. You will be highly organised, with proven experience in a laboratory environment.


You will be a Research Assistant with good interpersonal and management skills and be able to interact productively and accurately with other team members. Previous laboratory experience, good communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team are essential. You will be self-motivated and capable of working well in a laboratory team, which includes other postdoctoral scientists and/or graduate students.

The post is based at the Jenner Institute, in the Old Road Campus Research Building ( The TB vaccine group shares the Jenner Institute and works very closely with groups undertaking immunological evaluation of new vaccines against malaria, avian influenza and hepatitis C. There are strong links with other research centres in the University division of medical sciences and with overseas field sites.
