Research Assistant/Associate in Molecular Virology
University of Cambridge Department of Pathology
United Kingdom

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral vacancy in molecular virology to join the group of Dr Valeria Lulla ( studying fundamental biology underlying diseases caused by intestinal RNA viruses. The project will focus on understanding the molecular mechanisms behind replication, pathogenicity and virus-host interactions of astroviruses - one of the most prevalent but least studied groups of human RNA viruses. Funding for this research comes from the Royal Society and the Wellcome Trust.

The position will suit a motivated postdoctoral scientist who wishes to develop their career in experimental molecular virology.

The postholder should have a PhD (or about to be awarded one) in a relevant subject.

The successful candidate must have significant experience of working in a research laboratory. A demonstrated ability to perform and publish high-quality research that is commensurate with their career stage is essential. Robust technical skills in cell culture and molecular biology techniques are also essential. Prior experience in biochemical assays, RNA/protein analyses, virological techniques, and/or fluorescence microscopy imaging would be advantageous. Our laboratory works on multiple RNA viruses and employs a wide range of techniques, including cloning and mutagenesis, construction of recombinant viruses, human intestinal organoid culture and infection assays, RNA/protein/organelle extraction and analysis, protein-protein and protein-RNA interaction assays, microscopy, high-throughput RNA-seq and ribosome profiling.

Where the successful applicant does not yet have a PhD, they will normally be under-appointed as a Research Assistant in a Research Associate post (on the understanding that they will be appointed as a Research Associate upon successful completion of their PhD). The higher Research Associate salary should be backdated to the submission date of their thesis.

The ability to work both independently as well as part of a team, coupled with excellent communication, organizational and problem solving skills are required. The duties/responsibilities of this post include developing and driving research objectives, preparing research results for presentation/publication, mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, and delivering occasional seminars as outlined in the Further Information Documents.

The application closing date is 15 June 2021. The start date is after 1 September 2021. Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 31 August 2026 in the first instance.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment.

Applications are welcome from internal candidates who would like to apply for the role on the basis of a secondment from their current role in the University.
