Job description

Job summary

The research programme, led by Prof Simon Gregson, is investigating the ways in which the COVID-19 epidemic and Government and other local responses to the epidemic are affecting HIV risk behaviours and use of efficacious HIV prevention methods in Zimbabwe.

More broadly, the aim of the project is to evaluate the feasibility and utility of measuring HIV prevention cascades and associated explanatory factors for HIV risk groups in general population surveys. The HIV prevention cascade is a novel approach that seeks to identify and quantify gaps in implementation of HIV prevention methods so that interventions can be targeted at these gaps to reduce the incidence of new infections.

The programme is being undertaken by the Manicaland Centre for Public Health Research, a collaborative research centre run by Imperial College London and the Biomedical Research and Training Institute. The programme is being funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the US National Institutes for Mental Health.

Duties and responsibilities

You will be responsible for conducting statistical data analyses, data management, and preparing presentations, reports, and papers for publication in scientific journals. You will also assist in managing the Manicaland Centre’s database systems in conjunction with field staff in Zimbabwe.

This is a rewarding position within a team of multi-disciplinary collaborators. The results of the study will inform HIV control programmes in Zimbabwe; and, we hope, UNAIDS guidelines on the use and interpretation of HIV prevention cascades to strengthen HIV programmes internationally.

Essential requirements

We are looking to recruit a highly motivated and enthusiastic candidate who is able to deliver to deadlines, and work and communicate regularly with team members at Imperial College and overseas including Zimbabwe.

You should have a PhD (for appointment to Research Associate) or MSc (for appointment to Research Assistant) in one of the following areas: infectious disease epidemiology, public health, demography, statistics, or an alternative quantitative discipline.

You should have strong skills and some experience in managing complex databases, HIV epidemiology, and statistical analysis preferably in low-income settings. You should also have very good presentation and organisational skills and are able to liaise with the wider team and work to deadlines.

Further information

This post is full time and fixed term for 12 months in the first instance and will be based at the St Mary’s Campus, Paddington. Imperial College is supportive of flexible working. The College is happy to discuss the possibility of implementing such arrangements for this post, with suitably qualified people, subject to operational requirements.

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £36,045 - £39,183 per annum.

Should you have any queries please contact Prof Simon Gregson (s.gregson@imperial.ac.uk).
