Job summary

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic Research Associate to join our team within the Division of Anaesthetics, Pain Medicine & Intensive Care at Imperial College London. 

You will join the Critical Care Research Group working with Dr Michael Wilson and Professor Masao Takata.  We are part of a team of basic scientists and clinical researchers focussed on understanding the nature of critical illness, in particular acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).  This is a hugely important area of research currently, given that ARDS is associated with ~90% of deaths among COVID-19 patients.

This post is funded by the Medical Research Council as part of a project grant awarded to Dr Wilson.  Currently, treatment options for patients with ARDS are mainly limited to supportive care, including mechanical ventilation. 

However, it is generally accepted that when patients suffering from ARDS are placed on a ventilator this can exacerbate their injury and increase mortality, a phenomenon termed ‘ventilator-induced lung injury’ (VILI).  Importantly, VILI is essentially a damaging inflammatory response to ventilation, and as such, understanding the mechanisms of VILI may lead to identification of new therapeutic targets for ventilated patients. 

We have identified a novel process by which this inflammatory response may occur and disseminate throughout the body, and this post is designed to explore these mechanisms using various experimental methodologies.

Duties and responsibilities

You will be responsible for running the experimental programme underpinning this exciting new project.  Under the guidance of Dr Wilson this will include:

  • Planning and performing preclinical in vivo and in vitro studies
  • Carrying out all ex vivo analyses, using a variety of methodologies
  • Preparation of manuscripts and presentation of findings, both internally and at national / international conferences
  • Contributing to the day-to-day operation of the of the wider research team

Essential requirements

    • You must hold (or be close to receiving) a PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant life sciences discipline, e.g. physiology, immunology
    • You must also currently hold, or have recently held, a Home Office personal licence, and have experience of working with preclinical disease models
    • It is expected that you will have previously presented work at national or international conferences, and have contributed substantially to peer-reviewed publications in high quality journals
    • You should have knowledge and experience of relevant experimental and statistical approaches
    • You should also have excellent communication skills and a willingness to support  other members of the research team

Further information

This is a full-time, fixed term contract for 34 months, and will be based across Hammersmith Campus (East Acton) and Chelsea & Westminster Campus.

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £36,045 - £39,183 per annum.
