Research Associate in Biostatistics
University of Cambridge
United Kingdom

The MRC Biostatistics Unit is one of Europe's leading biostatistics research institutions. Our focus is to deliver new analytical and computational strategies based on sound statistical principles for the challenging tasks facing biomedicine and public health.

This role will be part of a cross-institution research team, working within the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) Health Protection Research Unit (HPRU) in Behavioural Science and Evaluation, in collaboration with the University of Bristol and Public Health England (PHE). The work will support PHE and other relevant partners through the development and application of novel statistical techniques to inform, develop and evaluate public health interventions.

Possible projects include: (a) development and application of methods for evaluation of non-randomised interventions/programs to reduce transmission of infection; (b) development of existing models for real time monitoring of epidemics; (c) longitudinal analysis of bio-markers in infection/reinfection studies; (d) analysis and synthesis of evidence from multiple data streams (e.g. surveillance data and population surveys) for incidence and prevalence estimation and prediction.

Results from this work will contribute to the understanding of the burden of infectious diseases in the population and contribute to policies to reduce such burden. Within the context of the current CoVID-19 pandemic, this work will inform the public health response through collaboration with Public Health England (PHE) and government scientific advisory groups (SPIM and SAGE).

The post will suit someone experienced in mathematical and statistical modelling and/or with a substantial quantitative background in infectious disease epidemiology. This post is funded through the NIHR Health Protection Research Units programme. The Unit is situated on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, one of the world's most vibrant centres of biomedical research, which includes the University of Cambridge's Clinical School, two major hospitals, the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, and the world headquarters of Astra Zeneca.

The Unit is actively seeking to increase diversity among its staff, including promoting an equitable representation of men and women. The Unit therefore especially encourages applications from women, from minority ethnic groups and from those with non-standard career paths. Appointment will be made on merit.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 3 years in the first instance.
