Research Associate in Cancer Genetic Epidemiology

We are seeking a talented bioinformatician to work on the analysis of genetic data within the Centre for Cancer Genetic Epidemiology. The projects are likely to include analyses of very large exome and targeted sequencing studies in breast cancer, as well as sequence data arising from projects in early detection of cancer.

This post is based in the Centre for Cancer Genetic Epidemiology, which forms part of the Department of Public Health and Primary Care. The Centre carries out research into inherited susceptibility to common cancers and conducts significant large-scale analyses both within the Centre and as part of ongoing collaborations. The Centre comprises some 25 staff, including research staff, statisticians, computer officers, administrative staff and post graduate students as well as 2 - 3 visiting researchers each year.

The post-holder is required to provide bioinformatics support for projects with the centre. These will include the analysis of whole exome, whole genome and targeted sequencing projects in large population-based studies, as well as sequence data arising from projects in early detection of cancer. The post-holder will develop, implement and validate software for the management and analysis of scientific data for these projects, in order to support the delivery of the projects.

Essential Qualifications/Skills:

  • PhD in a related field such as Bioinformatics, statistics or have equivalent qualifications or experience
  • Knowledge and use of scripting language, e.g..Perl or Python, statistical programming (e.g. R), Unix/Linux and Windows batch scripting
  • Experience in handling large-scale DNA sequence datasets

Desired Knowledge/Skills:

  • Knowledge of a high-level programming language (e.g. Java, C++, C# would be a strong advantage.
  • Ability to assimilate rapidly new software, scientific, medical and statistical concepts

In addition to these skills, the post-holder should also be able to work independently judging priorities and have excellent organisational and communication skills.

The post is full-time. We welcome part-time applications of no less than 50% FTE
