Applications are invited to join dynamic teams led by Prof Sanjay Sinha (https://www.stemcells.cam.ac.uk/people/pi/sinha) and Dr Richard Tyser (https://www.stemcells.cam.ac.uk/people/pi/tyser), working to understand how the human heart develops. This strategic sLoLa project, recently funded by the BBSRC, will combine state-of-the-art single-cell and spatial transcriptomics using cutting-edge bioinformatics to generate a heart developmental atlas at unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution. The team will then leverage this atlas alongside stem cell studies to determine the critical molecular regulators of events during human heart development and determine how to better recreate the heart using stem cells. This project is a collaboration between University of Cambridge, University of Oxford and Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute and will involve close working with consortium members across all three institutions. We have established novel in vitro systems using human ES and iPS cells from which a range of cardiovascular cells may be generated (Cheung et al Nature Biotech 2012, Iyer et al Development 2015, Bargehr et al Nature Biotech 2019) as well as unique insight into cardiac development (Tyser, Ibarra et al Science 2021, Tyser, Mahammadov et al Nature 2021). These tools and insight provide an ideal platform for state-of-the-art organoid models, which will enable us to explore human heart development at a molecular and functional level. Discoveries from the atlas and in vitro systems will be tested in vivo using model organisms such as the mouse. The two advertised positions are funded by the BBSRC for up to 5 years. You will have a PhD with a strong background in cell and molecular biology and a good publication record. It is essential that you have excellent communication and organisational skills and the ability to work collaboratively. Prior experience with human pluripotent stem cells, heart development and with single cell RNA sequencing will be advantageous.
