Job description

Job summary

We are looking for a Post-Doctoral Research Associate to join Professor Valeri’s newly established laboratory at Imperial College London. The team aims to discover novel biomarkers of response and resistance to anti-cancer drugs and to identify novel therapeutics with a specific focus on gastrointestinal cancers. Prof Valeri’s laboratory has an established track-record in using tissue and liquid biopsies to define molecular mechanisms and dynamics that govern primary and acquired resistance to anti-cancer drugs. Furthermore, Prof Valeri’s team has coordinated the first prospective observational study testing the ability of Patient-Derived Organoids from metastatic cancer patients to model treatment response.

Duties and responsibilities

In this role, you will work in close collaboration with internal and external collaborators in order to develop and annotate pre-clinical models to study cancer metastasis and drug resistance in colorectal and gastroesophageal tumours.

As a biologist, you will play a critical role in co-ordinating, developing and troubleshooting the key cancer cell biology experiments involved in the project. This will include developing, optimising and curating know-how, methodologies protocols and standard operating procedures (SOP) to culture, label, assay and analyse 3D cell cultures (including PDO) to study drug resistance and metastatic dissemination in gastrointestinal cancers. While you will predominantly work at Imperial College London (Hammersmith Campus), there will be opportunities to collaborate with colleagues and investigators at the Institute of Cancer Research London (Sutton Campus). You will provide support and training to research staff, MRes, MD and PhD students within the laboratory.

Essential requirements

    • You should hold or be about to obtain a PhD, or equivalent level of professional qualifications and experience, in a cancer biology related field
    • Proven research experience in developing and using 3D cell cultures and organoids
    • Proven research experience in preparing samples for single-cell analysis (i.e. cell dissociation, library preparation, troubleshooting)
    • Proven research experience in cancer biology
    • Knowledge of 3D cell culture techniques and challenges

Further information

This role is available on a full time, fixed term basis for 3 years.

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £36,045 - £39,183 per annum.

Should you require any further details on the role please contact: Prof. Iain McNeish – n.valeri@imperial.ac.uk
