This position is for a highly motivated PhD to join a dynamic research lab, headed by Dr. Christopher Carlsten, Principal Investigator (PI), in the Department of Medicine. The successful candidate will assist the PI in conducting research central to the mission of the lab, supervise trainees and oversee project-planning, and related work towards developing and obtaining funding for the laboratory.


Organizational Status:
The successful candidate will report to Dr. Christopher Carlsten. This position is at the Chan-Yeung Center for Occupational and Environmental Respiratory Diseases (COERD) within the Department of Medicine, Respiratory Division.


Responsibilities Include:


A) Research:
- Conduct statistical analysis to interpret data from human exposure and immunological studies.
- Perform in vitro, in vivo and in silico assays as required for research projects.
- Write scientific publications and present results at international conferences.


B) Trainee supervision and project planning:
- Work with the PI in planning and supervision of trainee research projects.
- Provides direction, technical knowledge and expertise to the COERD research team.
- Day to day management of COERD trainees' and staff research projects, including setting priorities and goals.
- Facilitate the development of collaborative research agreements, provide authoritative information and support to collaborating researchers, trainees, and staff.


C) Project planning, development, and funding:
- Work with the PI to set priorities and goals, and develop strategic research plans to further the long-term vision of COERD.
- Identify research synergies and create opportunities for new avenues of research, while matching funding opportunities to research activities and researchers.
- Collaborate with PI to identify, explore, and develop funding opportunities.
- Conduct and support research grant writing to obtain competitive funding for the lab.
- Preparing, composing, editing, and proofing documents such as grant applications, contracts, academic proposals, and scientific communications.
- Coordinating the acquisition of information from multiple sources and individuals.


D) Other:
- Performing other related duties as agreed to guarantee the success of ongoing projects.

 


Supervision Received:


The incumbent will receive supervision directly from Dr. Christopher Carlsten.


Consequence of Error/Judgement:


Makes professional decisions and complete tasks on hand with respect to the provided instructions. The incumbent is accountable for his/her own work and must exercise initiative and judgement in establishing priorities and completing delegated tasks.


Qualifications:


PhD degree and minimum two years of post-doctoral training in biomedical sciences relevant to the laboratory's mission (see https://pollutionlab.com). A track record of productivity in addition to experience and comfort with presenting at international scientific conferences. Demonstrated capacity to work with interdisciplinary teams of scientists and trainees.
