Role Description


The Department of Health Sciences is looking to appoint a Research Associate or Research Fellow (dependent on skills and experience) with experience in quantitative evaluation methods to lead on and/or contribute to research activities within the Better Start Bradford Innovation Hub. This is a unique opportunity to be part of a world-leading preventive research programme and research team, working to improve the life chances of children within Bradford.


Based predominantly in Bradford at the Bradford Institute for Health Research (min 3 days/week) and at the University of York, you will contribute to the design and implementation of research approaches to evaluate and analyse the effectiveness of multiple interventions delivered in the early years to improve the health of children.

Research Associate

  • To conduct research and contribute to the production of research, involving the application of a range of quantitative methods to support the evaluation of Better Start Bradford under the supervision of senior colleagues

Research Fellow

  • To participate actively in the planning and management of research projects (involving the application of quantitative methods to support the evaluation of Better Start Bradford), including supervising the work of others and providing expert advice/guidance
  • To contribute to and/or lead on the production of research outputs and research outcomes.
  • To contribute to and/or lead the obtaining of external research funding

Condition of appointment

This role is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act. Consequently, all applicants will be asked to declare both unspent and spent convictions on their application form.

Appointment of the successful candidate will be conditional on a Disclosure and Barring Service check.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

Research Associate

  • First degree in health related area with quantitative training
  • PhD involving quantitative methods in a health related area or equivalent experience
  • Knowledge of quantitative research techniques and methodologies
  • Knowledge and understanding of different designs to test effectiveness of public health interventions such as parent programmes, e.g. randomised controlled trials, stepped wedge trials, quasi-experimental approaches etc
  • Ability to develop/conduct individual and collaborative research projects and proposals, with the assistance of a mentor if required
  • Highly developed communication skills to engage effectively with a wide ranging audience
  • Good competency in a range of statistical methods for evaluation of public health interventions

Research Fellow

In addition to those outlined above for the Research Associate you will need:  

  • High level of competency in statistical methods for evaluation of public health interventions
  • Successful management of research projects including supervision of others and providing expert advice and guidance to teams
  • Ability to persuade and influence project stakeholders and develop research objectives, projects and proposals for own and joint research
  • Experience of undertaking publicly evidenced high quality research and evidenced active participation in the planning and advancement of research projects
  • Proven ability to attract and obtain external research funding

The post is fixed term for 2 years and funded by the National Lottery Community Fund
