Research Fellow in Imaging for Security and Medical Applications Nottingham Trent University, School of Science and Technology United Kingdom

As part of a highly experienced and award winning team, led by Distinguished Prof. Paul Evans, you will benefit from a world leading record of accomplishment in the field of X-ray imaging. The Imaging Science Group at Nottingham Trent University (NTU) has a fulltime postdoctoral Research Fellow post available initially for 3 years, with possibility of extension. The post is funded by a Royal Society and Wolfson Foundation research grant.

A Queen’s Anniversary Prize has recognised the group’s achievements in 2016, which highlighted their world class research and industrial impact. In addition, Prof. Evans received the IOP Gabor medal in 2017. The aviation security work has attracted around £10 million research funding from UK and US governments over recent years.

The successful candidate will be based at the NTU Clifton campus in Nottingham and will work in a multidisciplinary team, initially helping to develop new approaches to enhance aviation security systems. As a part of the research group, you will benefit from access to state of the art and unique laboratory facilities at NTU. Access is also available to other facilities at collaborating institutions; including government labs, industry and other research-intensive universities. The group’s aim in security screening is to develop detection principles and techniques that are applicable to a wide range of threats and in particular explosives/precursors. The work focuses on identifying threats and contraband within passenger luggage and postal packages, without manual searches or handling the items. Other areas of interest include medical diagnostics and process control. This exciting, multidisciplinary project would suit a highly motivated individual interested in any of the following areas: 3D/tomography/X-rays/X-ray diffraction (XRD) and also machine learning applied to the preceding areas, image analysis, material science, simulation and modelling, physics and engineering.

NTU has been awarded University of the Year by The Guardian in 2019, The Times in 2018, and Times Higher in 2017.

Entry requirements

This programme seeks candidates with a PhD degree and strong theoretic abilities in a relevant subject area i.e. physics/maths, imaging science, X-ray diffraction (XRD) simulation, engineering computing/machine learning; or an equivalence in industry experience.

Eligibility

This role does not meet the minimum requirements set by UK Visas & Immigration to enable sponsorship of migrant workers.  Therefore, we cannot progress applications from candidates who require sponsorship to work in the UK.
