The opportunity:

The present post is for a clinical research fellow on a Maurice Wilkins Centre (www.Mauricewilkinscentre.org) Principal Investigator grant awarded to Assoc Prof Rinki Murphy. The research position will suit someone who is interested in clinical research into diabetes. The 0.5FTE role offers the opportunity to fulfil the advanced training research project requirements by job-sharing one week on and one week off with a current clinical research fellow. https://www.racp.edu.au/docs/default-source/default-document-library/res-research-project-guidelines.pdf?sfvrsn=827311a_16

 

The main focus is on completing a randomised, blinded crossover study of two glucose lowering medications (vildagliptin and pioglitazone) as additional therapy in those people with type 2 diabetes failing monotherapy with metformin or failing dual therapy with metformin and sulfonylurea, in order to identify whether the glucose lowering response to each medication class varies by baseline characteristics (eg: ethnicity, BMI lipids, C-peptide, CREBRF genotype). There is a strong emphasis on recruitment of Māori, Pacific and Indian patients living in the Auckland area with a total recruitment target of 300 participants. Working with primary care practices and hospital diabetes clinic staff is required.

 

This role is available on a part-time basis  (.5 FTE) from 09 December 2019 to 08 December 2020.

Skills Knowledge and experience

  • Current medical practicing certificate and prescribing ability, with experience in  General Practice, General Medicine or Endocrinology / diabetes subspecialty
  • Excellent problem solving skills
  • Some statistical analytical skills and experience with Excel
  • Well organised with good time management skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Experience/interest in clinical trials and journal publications
  • Depending on the interests and aspirations of the applicant, other academic and career development activities may be undertaken


Key responsibilities:

  • Assist with project management
  • Assist with database development and testing
  • Drive recruitment from a variety of sources including different general practices
  • Assist with participant consent and assessments.
  • Develop relevant research management skills
  • Keep up to date with relevant literature
  • Maintain highly organised and accurate records
  • Contribute to writing of scientific papers communicating the results of research and the presentation of such at scientific meetings
