Research Fellow in Palliative Care

Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge? Do you have a background in palliative care? Do you want to further your career in one of the UK’s leading research-intensive Universities?

You will work at the St Gemma’s Academic Unit of Palliative Care (AUPC), University of Leeds to work on a research programme which aims to Improve Health Status and Symptom Experience for People Living with Advanced Cancer. The programme is funded by Yorkshire Cancer Research and led by Leeds in collaboration with the University of Hull.

In Yorkshire, over 14,000 people die from advanced cancer each year. In the weeks or months before they die, people with advanced cancer often experience pain, breathlessness or fatigue-exhaustion, which significantly reduce quality of remaining life. Our programme will directly improve the health status and symptom experience of Yorkshire patients living with advanced cancer and support their families. We will achieve this by (1) recognising early those who need help, (2) implementing regular assessment and monitoring of symptoms and other concerns, (3) providing better management of the most challenging symptoms. Our preliminary work within the early stages of this programme has identified that psychological distress can hinder effective symptom management.

This role will lead a study to explore the feasibility of implementing a brief psychological intervention for psychological distress for patients with advanced cancer. You will be closely supported by Dr Lucy Ziegler, Chief Investigator for the programme and Dr Emma Chapman who leads the workstream this post will contribute to.

The Academic Unit of Palliative Care is a well-established and supportive research team with an international reputation for delivering high quality research.
