Duties and Responsibilities


There is a post available for a Clinical Research Fellow/Clinical Training Fellow to work jointly in the Research Department of Maternal Fetal Medicine at the Institute for Women’s Health and UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health, with the Department of Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering through the Wellcome / EPSRC Centre for Interventional and Surgical Sciences (WEISS). It is expected that the post holder will apply to take a doctoral degree at UCL (PhD).


The post is funded jointly by the Wellcome Trust and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) via the GIFT-Surg project.


The post holder will work within a multidisciplinary team to test our technical achievements in a preclinical environment. The post will have a primary focus on developing stem cell and other therapeutic approaches delivered to the fetus to treat congenital abnormalities. The postholder will explore the development of stem cell and gene therapies with a view to testing them out pre-clinically.


The candidate will become an expert in developing and translating advanced fetal therapies and associated novel technologies into the clinic including negotiating regulatory and ethical aspects. They will join a team of clinicians, scientists and students working in this novel area of research and be responsible for the daily running of the project. It is expected that the post holder will apply to take a doctoral degree at UCL (PhD).


The candidate will be responsible for preparing experimental research protocols and follow a sequence of initial testing in mock up models of animals and continue in dedicated animal experiments for the study of feasibility, efficacy and safety including full histological analysis of tissues. Selected technological advances will then be taken into the clinic.


The appointment is available from 1st September 2019 and the duration of the post is 12 months in the first instance and may be extended to 36 months.


The post is also open for Clinical Training Fellows who hold an allocated NTN number, completing their Specialty Registrar Training, For Clinical Training Fellows the pay scale would correspond with the StR scale or JDPS scale.

 


Key Requirements

The successful candidate will be a highly organised individual, who are flexible and can work well in a diverse team of researchers across several sites in the UK and in Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium.



The candidate must have a medical degree and a strong interest in fetal therapy. Fluency in spoken and written English is essential. Experience in aspects of laboratory management and research would be desirable.
