An exciting opportunity has arisen to work at the forefront of medical research using very large clinical research databases and at the interface between epidemiology, medical statistics, data science and clinical medicine.


This new research medical statistician/data scientist postholder will report to Professor Julia Hippisley-Cox who has recently moved to Oxford and be a member of the newly formed Primary Care Epidemiology Research Group.


The successful candidate will provide support for a range of research activities within the Primary Care Epidemiology Research Group with a strong focus on primary care, cancer, mental health, cardiovascular disease and drug safety. This will include undertaking original research through the complex analysis of data from the anonymised QResearch primary care database linked to hospital, mortality and cancer registry data. You will be responsible for checking and manipulating datasets for analysis and, will carry out a number of complex statistical analyses and present the results for discussion and interpretation. In addition, you will lead on the preparation of manuscripts for publication and the drafting of reports to funding bodies.


The post would be ideally suited to someone proactive and ambitious who has obtained their Masters or PhD and is planning an academic career in data science, medical statistics or epidemiology. As the team expands, the post holder will provide guidance to junior members of the research group including research assistants, PhD students, and/or project volunteers and users of the QResearch database.


To succeed in this post, you will have research experience in a UK health setting; the ability to contribute ideas for new research projects and research income generation; the ability to carry out complex statistical analyses, interpret findings and present results; a high level competence in using statistical packages (STATA) for database manipulation and analysis; and previous experience of contributing to publications/presentations with authorship on at least one peer-reviewed publication in the area of UK health care within the last 5 years.


The post is fixed-term for up to 2 years, funded by the NIHR, Motor Neurone Disease Association, Pancreatic cancer UK. You will be based in the Radcliffe Primary Care Building, Department of Primary Care Health Sciences, Radcliffe Observatory Quarter, Woodstock Road, Oxford, OX2 6GG
