The Department of Psychiatry and Neurochemistry provides world leading translational research spanning cell and animal models to clinical studies and extensive epidemiological studies. Here, ground breaking research in areas such as bipolar disorder, addiction medicine, aging, neurochemistry and psychiatry are conducted.

In Alzheimer's disease (AD), aggregation of beta-amyloid peptide into extracellular plaques and hyperphosphorylated tau protein into intracellular neurofibrillary tangles occurs in the brain. It is still unclear when, how and where in the brain AD pathology appears. One focus has therefore been on neuronal lipids that have been implicated in AD plaque pathology suggesting a prominent relevance in amyloid plaque formation mechanism. In addition, there is a great need for molecular markers that that reflect different disease mechanisms to facilitate an early and accurate diagnosis. Today there are three CSF biomarkers used for the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease, but these can only be used quite late in the disease and they have a relatively large overlap between sick and healthy, highlighting the need for more accurate markers that reflect AD pathology.

Job assignments

The job assignments include being involved in different research projects on lipid analysis in Alzheimer’s disease and together with other researchers work establish and apply new methods for lipid analysis in preclinical and clinical neurochemistry studies and finally summarise and interpret data for scientific publications. Primary analyses methods include MALDI imaging mass spectrometry of lipids as well as ex vivo analysis of tissue extracts and CSF using mass spectrometry. The project further involves development of chemometric methods for multivariate data analysis.

We are looking for a positive, driven and independent researcher with PhD in either Analytical or Bioorganic Chemistry or similar. The applicant must have solid experience in imaging mass spectrometry including both MALDI and ToF SIMS.

When assessing the applicants' qualifications, great importance will be attached to research experience focusing on method development and knowledge of chemometric tools for multivariate analysis of imaging MS data.

The candidate must demonstrate very good knowledge in English (speech and writing). Furthermore, good ability to independently process data and write scientific publications is a prerequisite as well as being otherwise flexible and able to work both in groups and independently. Great importance will be attached to personal suitability.

The employment is a temporary position for 15 months, 100% of full-time, and is placed at the Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology. Starting date: as soon as possible or as agreed.
