The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 53 500 students and 6 500 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The School of Public Health and Community Medicine, at the Institute of Medicine, conducts extensive education and research in global public health, general medicine, occupational medicine, environmental medicine, social medicine, medicine use and pharmaceutical policy. We also conduct education and research within nutritional epidemiology, insurance medicine, innovation and utilization, health economics, biostatistics and register epidemiology.

You will be positioned within the research unit Sound Environment and Health www.amm.se/ljudmiljo. The research within Sound Environment and Health is highly interdisciplinary with members or collaboration across environmental medicine, acoustics, audiology, speech therapy, epidemiology, statistics, psychology and public health. A range of health outcomes are being studied, including sleep disturbance, chronic illness (such as cardiovascular disease), hearing disorders and noise annoyance.  We have a unique sound environment laboratory, where we perform experimental sleep studies to evaluate the effects of noise and vibration. The group also has extensive experience of sound level measurements and room acoustic measurements in the field, of major epidemiological questionnaire studies, and of intervention studies mainly in schools and healthcare. Within the research group, we have a number of different ongoing research projects, including major international EU projects, as well as epidemiological projects.

Job assignments

You will be the project manager with responsibility of a follow-up study within a longitudinal epidemiological project that examines occupational noise exposure, psychosocial work environment, work function and above all hearing-related health based on both risk and health factors among women. The current project aims to explore the association between hearing-related symptoms (including hyperacusis) and work function (including sick-leave) in female-dominated occupations, and possible added risk among those working in communication-intensive sound environments or among people suffering from stress-related disorder.

In addition to research, your tasks within the research group will also include teaching and supervision of students from undergraduate to postgraduate level, the university's “third task” disseminating knowledge to the media and the general public, and administrative tasks such as being responsible for the research group's website.

Qualifications

To qualify as a researcher, the applicant must have completed a Swedish doctoral degree or have a foreign degree corresponding to a Swedish doctoral degree. For this research position, we require relevant and documented scientific background in the fields of work environment (with a focus on sound environment and psychosocial environment), audiology and epidemiology or clearly related areas is mandatory.

Good written and spoken skills in both English and Swedish are necessary. Requirements are also experience and documented knowledge in medical statistics, and knowledge of statistical programs like SPSS, SAS and STATA. Publication in scientifically reputable journals is necessary. Experience of ethics applications, large questionnaire surveys and handling personal data is a strong merit. Experience of sound level measurements and analyses is meriting. Documented experience of teaching and supervision as well as completed higher education pedagogical courses will be considered a strong merit. Experience of research communication is also meriting. Experience of project management is an advantage. Candidates should have experience of writing and collaborating on research applications and candidates who has received their own research grants are valued very highly.

The candidate must be highly motivated and interested in the relationship between occupational exposures, environmental exposures and health outcomes. Documented interest and experience of research studies on sound environment and hearing is particularly meritorious. We value personal qualities highly, such as being analytical, accurate, and taking initiatives, having the ability to work individually but also having good collaboration skills within a team. Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.
