Position description

The Project Scientist in the laboratory of Gerry Lipshutz will perform independent research to study GABAA receptor mediated alterations in tonic inhibition. The successful applicant for this position will have expertise in GABA-mediated neurotransmission and have expertise in synaptic and extrasynaptic GABAA recptors and GABA mimetics. The Project Scientist will also be responsible for helping to supervise graduate students and undergraduate student researchers, preparing manuscripts for publication in scientific journals, and assisting with the preparation of grant proposals. This position requires a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology or related field and a minimum of 5 years of experience in the study of GABAAR-mediated neurotransmission and molecular cloning. The Project Scientist position is a non-Senate position for 12-months in the first instance. Step is commensurate with experience. The assigned project is focused on understanding the brain and neurologic abnormalities in both arginase deficiency and guanidinoacetate methyltransferase deficiency. Both are likely mediated in part by GABA mimetics and the role of the Project Scientist will in part be to determine the underlying mechanism of dysfunction occurring in both of these disorders.

Specific Responsibilities include:
Responsibilities of this position include study design, data acquisition, statistical computation, and literature review and assistance with manuscript/grant preparation.

Additional Duties:• Supervision of undergraduates, graduate students and new postdoctoral trainees in the lab.• Ability to work on multiple projects efficiently and effectively.• Ability to work independently on scientific projects.• Assist with preparation of grant proposals.• Preparation of manuscripts for publication in scientific journals.• Required to communicate well with other scientists and lab members.• Candidate should have 5 years research experience in molecular biology in an academic setting or equivalent.• Candidate should have extensive experience in GABA-mediated circuits and GABAA receptors.• The candidate will report directly to the Principal Investigator and will successfully carry out experiments and analyze the data generated with minimal supervision.• Ability to handle several projects simultaneously.• Ability to help and train various personnel in techniques of molecular biology and analysis and make significant contributions to the design and execution of other laboratory members' experiments.
