Resolution Of Inflammation And Its Mediators In Models Of Osteoarthritis

 

The ArthritisHeal project aims to train young researchers to generate novel therapeutic targets focusing on the role of pro-resolving lipids in two rheumatic diseases; osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The network is composed of 7 universities and 2 companies that will train 12 ESRs. In addition, 8 associated partners will provide secondment opportunities and training in topics such as regulatory and IP issues, presentation skills and career development. The beneficiaries combine expertise in clinical sciences, pre-clinical RA and OA models, biochemistry and data analysis. Each ESR will follow a personalized training programme covering all aspects of development of novel therapeutic targets, from discovery to validation in patients.

 

This research will be performed at the Laboratory of Tissue Homeostasis and Disease in the KU Leuven Skeletal Biology and Engineering Research Centre (SBERC), under the supervision of Prof. Rik Lories. The SBERC is a leading research centre for osteoarthritis. KU Leuven is the highest ranked non-US university in the list of most innovative universities (7th overall). In addition, M. Curie projects are embedded in a comprehensive program of courses and exchange visits between the partner institutions. Part of the training period will be carried out at Pharmatics Limited (Scotland - UK), and Sciex (Germany).

Project

We are looking for a PhD-student who will analyse the resolution phase of inflammation in different animal models of osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is the most common chronic joint disease and is increasingly recognized as a disease to which all tissues of the joint contribute. Inflammation is considered an important contributor and a preferred therapeutic target. The PhD-student is responsible for planning and performing the experiments and reporting and publishing the results in scientific journals and at international conferences. This project will determine the precise kinetics of inflammatory changes and their resolution in the DMM, collagenase and papain models of osteoarthritis,collect samples for lipidomic analysis and samples for gene expression studies at the determined timepoints and analyse these in collaboration with partners in the network. Method development as well as the analysis of biologically relevant sample materials will allow the student to obtain broad knowledge not only in analytical chemistry but also biochemistry and biology with a special focus on models of arthritis.

Profile

All suitably qualified candidates irrespective of gender are welcome to apply as long as the following conditions have been fulfilled:

Applicants should have a degree in Biomedical Sciences, Life Science & Technology or Bioengineering.

Applicants should have good knowledge of English, both written and oral.

We are looking for an enthusiastic candidate with talent for experimental research and keen to answer important biomedical research questions. PhD-students involved in this project will make short-term exchange visits with the institutes of the other partners.
