The Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University seeks a talented, enthusiastic, and experienced individual to work with Institute researchers and faculty to help build our Therapeutics Discovery capabilities. This candidate will have expertise in molecular cell biology and physiology as well as extensive experience in any of the following disease areas: cancer, lung disease, infectious diseases, or gastrointestinal disorders. They will also be responsible for actively carrying out studies at the bench, as well as leading and managing, internal and external sponsored research programs that design and develop therapeutics based on microfluidic organ-on-a-chip (Organ Chip) human in vitro experimentation technology. This will require a strong background in vitro cell based assays, requiring hands-on experience with primary cell culture, development of cell-based microfluidic Organ Chip assays, molecular, biochemical, and genetic analysis methods, and bioinformatics techniques in a research and development environment. Responsibilities also include design of experimental procedures and protocols, execution of experiments with cells, and sample preparation/analysis. Specific experience with cancer, stromal-epithelial interactions, blood-brain barrier, microvascular cells, as well as IPS-derived cells and organoid-based cultures would be advantageous. The successful candidate for this position will report to the Lead Senior Staff Scientist and faculty Lead of the Bioinspired Therapeutics platform. He or she will perform research focused on discovery of new disease mechanisms, identification of therapeutic targets, and discovery, design, and development of novel therapeutic compounds in various conventional culture formats as well as Organ Chips. A successful candidate must be open to working in a highly dynamic, interdisciplinary, team-focused environment, and will also assist in the training, supervision, and mentoring of other team members, including post-doctoral fellows, graduate students, undergraduates, interns, and research associates. The candidate will also work in collaborative efforts with other researchers at the Institute across disciplines, Harvard University, and collaborating institutions. The chosen candidate for this position will contribute results for the preparation of protocols, presentations, grants, technical reports, and patents.    

Basic Qualifications

Ph.D. or MD/PhD in Cell Biology, Physiology, Cancer biology, Pharmacology or related field required. 5 or more years of experience in in-vitro cell base assays, pathophysiology, and target identification/validation. Education may count towards years of experience.  

Additional Qualifications

Proficiency with personal computers and applicable software packages (Microsoft Word, Excel) is strongly preferred. The ideal candidate will have past experience managing a collaborative work team as well as strong organizational and communication skills required to assist and collaborate with a multidisciplinary group of technology innovators, engineers, biologist and clinicians in a dynamic team environment. Ability to tackle and lead multiple projects simultaneously while participating at the bench as a member of an integrated multidisciplinary team is essential. Experience mentoring fellows and/or students is preferred. Excellent writing skills and strong commitment to educating and mentoring students, post-doctoral fellows, and clinicians.
