Specialist- Molecular Biology/ Genetic Engineering

This role is an excellent opportunity to learn a number of exciting, cutting-edge techniques in molecular biology, genetic engineering, proteomics, and management of datasets and databases. The position will involve genetic engineering with CRISPR/Cas9, in-vitro culturing, the handling of pathogens such as Influenza and HIV, and the handling of primary human blood and tissue samples.

You will be joining the Krogan Lab (http://kroganlab.ucsf.edu), a highly productive and collaborative laboratory focusing on the molecular networks underpinning infectious disease, carcinogenesis and psychiatric disorders. You will be working with an ambitious and supportive research team.

We seek a motivated, skilled Junior, Assistant , or Associate Specialist to help develop primary cell culturing and genetic engineering protocols for use in studying the human genes underling pathogen infection and replication. The Junior Specialist position requires a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences. The Assistant or Associate Specialist position requires a master’s degree in biological sciences or 5 or more years of relevant laboratory experience. In addition, the Associate Specialist position requires a record of academic accomplishments, contributions to published research, and a demonstrated record of public or university service. Candidates must meet the requirements by the time of appointment. Our ideal applicant is a problem solver with a positive attitude, excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, and the ability to learn and implement methodology efficiently.

Skills required:
Cell / tissue culture experience
Molecular cloning 
Transfection, viral transduction, and/or electroporation of genetic material into cultured cells
Western blot
Excellent organizational skills
Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and/or Powerpoint)

Preferred skills:
Flow cytometry
Fluorescence microscopy
Handling of blood and tissue samples
Culturing of primary human immune cells
Experience handling BSL2 and BSL3 pathogens such as HIV
Genetic engineering using CRISPR/Cas9
Quantitative PCR
Adobe Illustrator
Experience managing large datasets and/or databases
