Overview:

The William Harvey Research Institute (WHRI)

Queen Mary University of London

Versus Arthritis Lecturer in Experimental Inflammation Sciences

The William Harvey Research Institute (WHRI; www.whri.qmul.ac.uk) is a dynamic academic institution, with 90% of its research judged world-leading and internationally excellent (REF2014). WHRI, in a strategic partnership with the multi-disciplinary Centre for Inflammation and Therapeutic Innovation (CiTI; www.qmul.ac.uk/citi/) at the Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), is at the vanguard of uncovering molecular and cellular disease pathomechanisms and exploring and developing innovative strategies for their novel effective therapies.

Professor Antal Rot is a Versus Arthritis Chair in Inflammation Sciences and a Wellcome Trust Investigator (http://www.qmul.ac.uk/whri/people/academic-staff/items/rotantal.html). He has been studying chemokines and their receptors since the moment of their discovery and remains at the forefront of chemokine research. Currently, his group at the Centre of Microvascular Research, WHRI and CiTI uses modern imaging and other tools of experimental pathology to uncover the multifaceted contribution of the atypical chemokine receptors to immunity and disease pathogeneses. In this context, supported through the endowment by the Versus Arthritis (https://www.versusarthritis.org), WHRI is seeking to recruit a Lecturer adjunct to the group to perform cutting edge research on molecular and cellular mechanism of experimental autoimmune and musculoskeletal diseases focusing on the involvement of chemokines and their receptors.

The successful candidate should have a relevant biological/medical qualification PhD, MD, DVM, or equivalent and completed successful postdoctoral training hallmarked by a strong track record of publishing high-quality papers in major international journals on subjects related to the mechanisms of autoimmunity and chemokine-driven pathways, in partcular. The successful candidate must clearly demonstrate strategic scientific thinking, ability to attract research funding and establish independent line of research, and also to desire and ability to participate in educational mission of WHRI, at all possible levels.

The post is full time and for the period of five years. Starting salary will be in the range from £37,411 to £44,015 per annum inclusive of London Allowance. Benefits include 30 days’ annual leave, pension scheme and interest-free season ticket loan.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.
